Andreuzzi House

Navarons is a characteristic hamlet of the municipality of Meduno located on the right bank of the Meduna stream, on the eastern slopes of the Mount Raut massif. In 1864, when Friuli was still under Habsburg rule, it was the scene of an insurrectional attempt inspired by Mazzini, which went down in history as the “Navarons uprising”. The eco-museum “Casa Andreuzzi” in Meduno (hamlet Navarons) was established with the intention of handing down the memory of the Friulian uprisings of 1864, a little-known episode of historical interest and ethical and moral content that deserves to be known. Casa Andreuzzi gathers evidence of the relationships between the patriot Antonio Andreuzzi, his son Silvio and the great figures of Italian Risorgimento history such as Mazzini and Garibaldi. The intention was to organise armed parties of patriots whose actions would create the conditions for a new war against Austria and the completion of Italian unity.
On 16 October 1864, about 50 men, armed and with the tricolour on their heads, patriot veterans of Garibaldi’s battles, set out from Navarons towards Spilimbergo and Maniago to attack the Austrian garrison and invite the population to insurrection. The aim was to create a state of agitation in the territory of the ‘Tre Venezie’ (Three Venetias) that would stimulate the Italian army to liberate Friuli, Trentino and Veneto. But the Friulian parties were actually alone and had to face Austrian repression. Organising the undertaking was the doctor Antonio Andreuzzi, his son Silvio and his brother Luigi, who had been living in Paris for a long time and had brought the ideals of the French Revolution home with him.
