The “Piera da l’aga” (Ciago)
In the hamlet of Ciago, during work on the construction of the railway, numerous finds from Roman times have come to light. Legend has it that the town of Ciago once existed, defended by the four castles surrounding it: Cavasso, Meduno, Toppo and Solimbergo, and that it was devastated by Attila passing through.
As evidence of the pre-Roman origins of the town of Meduno, in Ciago (a hamlet of Meduno) you can admire the “Piera da l’aga”, a monolith that, according to some legends, may have been used by pre-Roman populations as a sacrificial altar. Popular beliefs also ascribed beneficial properties for eyesight to the rainwater retained in this stone. However, later studies have shown that the stone was actually the pressing base of a wine press from Roman times.
The monolith is now located next to the small church of San Bartolomeo in Ciago.
