Church of Santa Maria Maggiore
The Parish Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Meduno (PN) has ancient origins, dating back to the 11th-12th centuries, when it was elevated to a baptismal parish church. The building underwent numerous changes over the centuries, with major renovations in the 16th century and a makeover between 1830 and 1834. Neoclassical in style, the church suffered severe damage during the 1976 earthquake, which caused the loss of many frescos. However, a work by the Venetian Giovanni Carlo Bevilacqua, the “Dormitio Virginis”, preserved in the apse, remains.
One of the treasures of the church is an altarpiece painted by Giambattista Piazzetta in 1744, depicting the Madonna with Child and various saints, which has recently been restored.
Also of value are the baptismal font and holy water font from the 15th century, works by Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte. The church also houses a Rosary altar, richly decorated with statues of angels and saints.
The current building is the result of a post-earthquake reconstruction and preserves part of its long history, proven by the works of art and sculptures treasured there.
