The Battle of Roburnon
During the First World War, more precisely on 4 November 1917, Meduno was the scene of the Battle of Roburnon, in which a small part of Italian troops fought against Austrian troops. There was an attempt to halt the Austrian advance by a group of Sicilian Bersaglieri, who lurked with machine guns along the line that ran from the meadows of Borgo Del Bianco to the houses of Roburnon. The battle raged throughout the night. The inhabitants of the area spent hours in fear and anguish. On the morning of 5 November 1917, Austrian troops surrounded the young Italian soldiers from the nearby heights. Despite strenuous resistance, the Italian soldiers, short of ammunition, were overwhelmed. The twenty-three Italian fallen soldiers are now commemorated with a monument in Borgo Pitagora in Meduno, where their names are engraved.
